Day 3
Cork HarbourToday will
be spent exploring Cork Harbour, the most
important estuarine area in the County. It is one
of the finest natural harbours in the world and
was the point of departure for most Irish
emigrants to the U.S.A. up until the 1950s.It was
also the last port of call for the Titanic and
the Heritage Centre in Cobh is well worth a visit
as it is twinned with Ellis Island.
On the extensive mudflats around Lough Mahon, the
Douglas Estuary, Lough Beg and Rostellan we shall
look for Shellducks and Little Grebes to name but
a couple.
Returning to Kinsale we can do a walking tour of
the town before dinner. The history here is
fascinating, especially the Spanish influence and
the Battle of 1601 which changed the course of
Irish history forever. We visit St. Multose
Church, Desmond Castle (1500) Charles Fort (1682)
and the 18th. Century Bowling Green.
After dinner tonight we have a special treat. We
will be entertained by tenor Michael Lawlor who
will sing all the old Irish favourites,
especially the works of Percy French. We not only
get the songs but also the stories behind them,
some of which are extremely funny and others
heartbreaking.
