DESCRIPTION
- Donegal Golf Club on the Murvagh peninsula in Donegal
Bay, hence it is generally known as Murvagh, just six
miles from Donegal Town, one mile off the N15 on the
south side. The links is isolated from the outside world
by a forest of evergreens washed on one side by the great
Atlantic Ocean and with a panoramic view of the Bluestack
Mountains.
What Pat Ruddy said at the official opening in the early
1970's, is still true today.
"There are so many good holes on the course that it
is difficult to know where to begin. But the most
exciting stretch, for my money, would be from the fifth
through the eighth.
The fifth is a par-3 of 174 metres from the tee to a
plateau green. One can only see the top of the flag from
the tee and apparent perdition on all sides. In fact, the
green is adequate and accommodating for a good shot. But
it has to be good.
For the sixth, you climb onto a high tee which gives you
your first view of the wonderful beach which runs for
miles and affords safe bathing and almost total privacy
to your family while you play a round.
The sixth is a par-5 of 478 metres out across a valley
and up and over what could be described as a pimple to a
cleverly sloping green. A haven for the big hitter.
The seventh is a bit old-fashioned but very nice. The tee
shot is to the crest of a hill and your second plunges
downwards to a two-tier green. At 401 metres, and just
with just enough fairway, it demands two good shots.
And so to the eighth, which is a par-5 of 499 metres
running along and over a gentle hill. Two cracking woods
will leave you in a long valley running diagonally across
the fairway and with a pitch up to a massive green. You
can afford a bit of slackness on the third....if you
don't mind three-putting!
The joys continue if you are playing well. The ninth
tumbles down a hill towards the clubhouse and how proud
you can walk after a big drive. But be careful not to
muff the pitch. And don't heed that gallery upstairs in
the clubhouse, pints of stout in hand, as you square up
to your drive at the tenth and more delightful
adventures.
But it is foolish to try and describe such a fine course
on paper. One can only say that here is one of Ireland's
finest courses. Go and watch some golf there...it is
bound to become the venue for some fine events..or better
still, play a round yourself."
